More than 21,200 Dominion Energy customers in Fairfax County lost power on June 12, 2026, as a line of severe thunderstorms swept through the region with damaging wind gusts of up to 70 mph.
According to Dominion Energy’s outage map, the majority of outages were concentrated in the eastern part of the county by 8 p.m., with some affecting the Fair Oaks area as well. The National Weather Service reported the severe thunderstorm warning included hazards of 70 mph wind gusts, and the storms moved southeast at speeds of 30 mph.
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department received multiple calls for downed trees and wires as a result of the storm. The county advised residents to stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines and to report them to Dominion Energy at 1-866-366-4357 or to NOVEC at 703-335-0500.
The outages came as Fairfax County activated its heat plan for June 12, with cooling centers with supplies made available during operating hours for residents needing assistance. The county also canceled all outdoor activities for public schools between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. due to a National Weather Service heat advisory in effect that day.
As of 8 p.m. on June 12, Dominion Energy had not yet determined an estimated restoration time for most of the affected areas. However, according to Prince William County Parks, Dominion’s latest update earlier that day estimated power restoration sometime between 3 and 8 p.m.
A comparable storm in May 2025 affected a broader region, with Dominion Energy restoring power to over 24,000 customers across Hampton Roads and North Carolina after severe weather with 70 mph winds, according to reporting by 13News Now. In that event, about 150 customers remained without power after the initial restoration push.
