Publix closes Palm Bay store after 50 years, plans rebuild

Publix Super Markets permanently closed its longtime Palm Bay Center store at 4711 Babcock St NE on July 11, 2026, ending roughly 50 years of operation at the location. The closure marks the next phase of a major redevelopment project that will demolish the aging building and replace it with a newly constructed Publix supermarket.

The $8.75 million remodel is part of Publix’s broader modernization strategy across Florida. The new store will feature wider aisles, expanded food options, and self-checkout lanes as the grocer pursues what it calls “experience-focused” store formats. Publix, founded in 1930, operates more than 1,440 supermarkets across eight Southeast states and is the nation’s largest employee-owned company.

Across the grocery industry, store closures are increasingly part of long-term modernization efforts rather than signs of financial trouble. Retailers are retiring aging locations and replacing them with larger, more efficient supermarkets built around today’s shopping habits. Publix has outlined plans to remodel 162 stores in 2026 as part of this strategic investment in its store network.

The Palm Bay closure follows several other Publix shutdowns over recent months, including locations in St. Petersburg, Kendall, Atlanta, and Chamblee, Georgia. Despite these closures, Publix continues expanding its footprint. Recent openings include stores in Naples, Davenport, Winter Haven, and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, as well as Cold Spring, Kentucky. Additional locations are scheduled to open in the coming months.

For Palm Bay shoppers, several nearby Publix locations remain available within a six-mile radius, including stores at Melbourne Shopping Center, Palm Crossings in West Melbourne, Shoppes of Palm Bay, and Windover Square in West Melbourne. The redevelopment project reflects a nationwide trend of grocers modernizing aging store fleets to match evolving consumer expectations and shopping patterns.
