United A321XLR features 36 Economy Plus seats in new 150-seat cabin

United Airlines’ new Airbus A321XLR features 36 Economy Plus seats in a 150-seat cabin, marking a significant shift in the carrier’s strategy to balance premium capacity with economy offerings on long-haul routes.

The aircraft, which United took delivery of on June 3, 2026, boasts a three-cabin configuration: 20 Polaris lie-flat business seats with all-aisle access, 12 Premium Plus seats, 36 Economy Plus seats with extra legroom, and 82 standard economy seats, according to Simple Flying and Upgraded Points.

The A321XLR delivers 32 total premium seats—16 more than the Boeing 757 it replaces—reflecting United’s bet on premium long-haul demand. The 757 configuration offered only about 16 business-class seats and no premium economy cabin, as noted by Runway Girl Network and AeroTime. This expansion allows United to capture more revenue from corporate and premium leisure travelers on transatlantic and South American routes.

The 36 Economy Plus seats sit in a 3-3 configuration with additional legroom compared to standard economy. All 150 seats will feature Bluetooth connectivity for in-flight entertainment pairing, according to Business Insider. The aircraft is expected to enter commercial service this summer 2026, with United planning initial deployment from major East Coast hubs like Newark and Washington Dulles.

United has ordered 50 A321XLRs, with deliveries continuing through the decade. The aircraft’s 4,700-nautical-mile range enables the airline to operate routes to smaller European cities and South America that the 757 previously served, while opening possibilities for new destinations. The A321XLR achieves its extended range through fuel efficiency, making it more cost-effective than the aging 757 fleet it’s designed to retire.
