The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert on June 25, 2026, for boneless chicken breast products sold at Kroger and Fred Meyer stores across nine states due to misbranding and an undeclared egg allergen.
The affected product is 21-ounce packages of Private Selection Honey Dijon Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts with Rib Meat bearing a best-if-used-by date of June 28, 2026, lot code 15326A, and establishment number P-45288B. The chicken was shipped to retail stores in Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Oregon, and Washington.
The problem stems from a packaging error: the correct label was applied to the front of the package, but the back label contains incorrect nutritional information that fails to declare eggs as an ingredient. For consumers with egg allergies, this mislabeling poses a serious health risk.
The raw chicken products were produced on June 2, 2026, and distributed to retail locations where they may still be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Although a formal recall was not issued because the product is no longer available for purchase, the FSIS urges consumers who have purchased these items to dispose of them or return them to their place of purchase for a refund.
Undeclared allergens represent a persistent food safety challenge in the United States. According to food safety data, undeclared allergens were among the leading causes of food recalls in 2025, with eggs being one of the nine major food allergens that account for the vast majority of allergic reactions. The FSIS identifies wheat, shellfish, eggs, fish, peanuts, milk, tree nuts, sesame, and soybeans as the most common undeclared allergens.
For individuals with an egg allergy, consuming mislabeled chicken containing undeclared eggs could trigger reactions ranging from mild to severe. According to health authorities, allergic reactions can occur within minutes or hours and may include hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, or anaphylaxis. The FSIS has received no confirmed reports of adverse reactions to this particular product as of now.
