State Farm has begun issuing $5 billion in dividend payments to auto customers, the largest payout in the company’s 100-plus-year history. Millions of customers have already received their dividend checks, with more arriving in the coming months as the distribution continues across more than 49 million State Farm Mutual auto vehicles, according to the company’s July 31 announcement.
Each customer’s payment is based on a percentage of the premiums paid for their policies in 2025, varying by state from 4% to 10%, with an average payout of approximately $100 per vehicle. The company is distributing the payments in waves nationwide, and the process will take several months to complete.

State Farm’s record dividend stems from exceptional financial performance in 2025. The company reported net income of $12.9 billion, more than double the $5.3 billion it earned in 2024. The auto insurance segment swung from a $2.7 billion underwriting loss in 2024 to a $4.6 billion underwriting gain in 2025, driven by lower collision frequency and declining auto repair costs.
As a mutual insurance company, State Farm is structured to return profits directly to policyholders rather than shareholders. Jon Farney, State Farm Mutual President and CEO, stated that the company is “able to provide value directly to our customers while maintaining financial strength to keep our promises in the future.” Beyond the dividend, State Farm has also reduced auto insurance rates in 40 states by an average of 10%, saving customers an additional $4.6 billion annually.

To qualify for the dividend, customers must have held an active State Farm Mutual auto insurance policy at any point during 2025. Qualifying customers are being notified by email or letter about their pending payment. Those with questions can visit sfdividend.com or call the Dividend Customer Contact Center at 1-888-808-9532.
The dividend does not affect future auto insurance rates, which State Farm says are based on expected future costs and current market trends. The company has historically paid dividends to auto customers when financial performance allows, though a five-year gap preceded this record payout. State Farm’s $5 billion dividend marks the largest in company history, reflecting the mutual company’s customer-first business model during a period of strong underwriting results.
