State Farm has begun issuing a $5 billion dividend to qualifying auto insurance customers, marking the largest payout in the mutual insurance company’s 103-year history. The Bloomington, Illinois-based insurer started distributing payments in late July 2026, with millions of customers already receiving their individual dividend checks and more payments arriving over the coming months.
The dividend covers more than 49 million State Farm Mutual auto vehicles and averages $100 per vehicle, though the exact amount each customer receives varies by state and the premiums paid in 2025. Dividend percentages range from 4% to 10% depending on the state, and the full distribution will take several months to reach all eligible policyholders nationwide.

State Farm announced the dividend in February 2026, citing strong underwriting performance and favorable industry trends. Lower claim frequency and reduced auto repair costs in 2025 enabled the company to return cash directly to customers while maintaining financial strength. As a mutual company, State Farm is owned by its policyholders rather than shareholders, allowing the insurer to distribute profits directly to members.
The dividend announcement came alongside significant rate reductions. State Farm lowered auto insurance rates in 40 states by an average of 10% in recent months, generating an additional $4.6 billion in annual savings for customers. Jon Farney, State Farm Mutual President and CEO, stated that the combination of lower rates and the dividend reflected the company’s customer-first focus and ability to provide value during a period of strong financial results.

The $5 billion payout represents a significant moment for the insurance industry, where mutual companies have historically used dividends to share profits with policyholders. The distribution is a one-time payment, meaning it does not affect future auto rates, which State Farm said will continue to be based on expected future costs and current risk trends.
Customers have been notified of their pending payments by email or letter and can track the status of their dividend through State Farm’s dedicated website or by calling the Dividend Customer Contact Center at 1-888-808-9532. The payment process, spanning millions of vehicles across the nation, is expected to continue through the remainder of 2026.
