Mark Warner slams Trump’s election security speech as ‘incredible lies’

U.S. Senator Mark Warner criticized President Trump’s primetime election security speech on July 16, urging Americans to scrutinize the president’s claims before accepting them as fact.

As vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Warner told Virginia reporters Thursday morning to “take most of what President Trump says tonight with a grain of salt” and to “let’s get it fact-checked and verified.” He directed his warning to all voters, saying, “I don’t care if you’re a President Trump supporter or an independent, please take whatever he says tonight with a grain of salt.”

Warner’s skepticism rests on intelligence findings. He pointed to the unanimous conclusion of all 18 U.S. intelligence agencies—reached while Trump was still president—that while Russia, Iran, and China attempted to influence the 2020 election through social media and disinformation, none succeeded in altering vote totals or compromising election infrastructure. “There was no successful interference in the 2020 election,” Warner stated, citing Chris Krebs, Trump’s own head of the Cybersecurity Agency, who called it “the safest election in American history.”

Warner fears Trump’s address signals the start of unprecedented federal overreach into state-run elections. He specifically warned that Trump may target Dominion Voting Systems—now operating as Liberty Voting—through executive order, potentially forcing states to abandon certified voting equipment ahead of November’s midterms. He also raised alarm about Trump’s recent firing of Election Assistance Commission members, which left the commission without any members. “You cannot suddenly get rid of all of the voting machines in Virginia that we’re using right now as we go through the primary season,” Warner said, noting that Virginia begins voting in September.

Warner expressed deep concern that Trump’s fixation on the 2020 election—particularly his loss in Georgia—is driven by fear of electoral rejection. “I believe he’s trying to set up his hardest core supporters to not trust the election when he gets his tail whooped come November,” Warner said. “And that scares the dickens out of me.” He characterized the speech as potentially “the most significant step yet” to interfere with the 2026 midterm elections, warning that Trump may use unsubstantiated claims of foreign interference to justify federal intervention in state-run elections.

Warner pointed to a specific conspiracy theory he said has been debunked: the claim that China smuggled hundreds of thousands of undocumented citizens into the country to secretly cast ballots, mostly in Georgia. “The intelligence community found absolutely no indication of such interference in Georgia or anywhere else during recent cycles,” he said.
