Karoline Leavitt returns to White House podium after maternity leave

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt returned to the podium on Thursday, July 16, after taking maternity leave following the birth of her daughter in May, marking her first briefing behind the microphone in more than two months.

Leavitt, 28, announced on May 1 that she and her husband welcomed their daughter, Viviana, describing her as “perfect and healthy.” The youngest White House press secretary in U.S. history had begun her maternity leave in April ahead of the birth.

During her absence, other senior Trump administration officials stepped in to brief the press. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio both held news conferences at the podium while Leavitt was away.

By June, Leavitt had begun returning to her duties, traveling with President Donald Trump to an event in Pennsylvania. Photos released by the White House showed her departing Air Force One with the president at Reading Regional Airport, signaling her gradual transition back to full-time work.

Thursday’s briefing came ahead of Trump’s primetime address scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. According to sources, the president was expected to focus on voting machine security and alleged efforts by foreign nations to influence U.S. elections. Trump had teased the announcement as “really, really big news,” emphasizing that “without free and fair elections, you don’t have a country.”

Leavitt, who took office as press secretary in January 2025, became the youngest person ever to hold the position, surpassing Ronald Ziegler, who was 29 when he served as President Richard Nixon’s press secretary. She is also the sixth working mother in a row to serve as White House press secretary.
