President Donald Trump unveiled a new rendering of a limited-edition commemorative passport on Friday, June 26, posting to Truth Social an image of himself looming over the Resolute Desk, with the text of the Declaration of Independence visible in the background and his signature at the bottom. Trump captioned the post: “The U.S.A.’s New Passport, which says, ‘Welcome, but be good!’ President DJT.”
The rendering marks the latest iteration of the special passport design created to mark America’s 250th anniversary. The new image differs from earlier renderings the State Department released in April 2026, which featured a different portrait of the president. According to CNN, the latest rendering appears to be based on Trump’s portrait from the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington.
The opposite page of the passport will feature John Trumbull’s painting “The Declaration of Independence,” according to reporting from CNN. The White House X account later posted the same rendering with the caption “New U.S. Passport to Commemorate America’s 250th.” When asked whether the new image represented the official rendering, the White House directed questions to the State Department, which CNN said had not yet provided comment on the latest version.
The State Department first announced the limited-edition passport design in April 2026 as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration. Between 25,000 and 30,000 copies of the commemorative passport will be produced, according to NPR. The passport will be issued as the default option for those renewing their passports in person at the Washington Passport Agency, though online renewals and applications at other locations will continue to use the existing passport design. Currently, the inside front cover of standard U.S. passports features an image of Francis Scott Key the morning after the bombardment of Fort McHenry, along with lines from “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Trump would be the first sitting U.S. president to have his image featured inside Americans’ travel documents, according to France 24. The limited-edition passport is part of a broader Trump administration initiative to include the president’s image on items commemorating America’s 250th anniversary, which also includes updated national parks passes.
