Business Insider has been named a finalist for three 2026 Gerald Loeb Awards, the most prestigious honor in American business journalism, in recognition of its investigative reporting and video journalism on AI data centers and the Gaza food economy.
The finalists were announced on August 27 by the G. and R. Loeb Foundation and UCLA Anderson School of Management. Business Insider’s three finalist entries span two categories: Investigative, for “The True Cost of Data Centers,” and Video/Longform, for “Inside the Secretive World of America’s AI Data Centers” and “We Mapped Out Gaza’s Deadly Food Economy.”
According to the Loeb Awards, the Investigative category recognizes work that demonstrates “originality; creativity and persistence in gleaning information; storytelling power; and impact.” The Video/Longform category honors “outstanding video journalism delivered in any platform on a business, financial or economic topic.” The awards recognize reporting that “informs and protects investors and the public,” according to the official announcement.
The Gerald Loeb Awards were established in 1957 by Gerald Loeb, a founding partner of E.F. Hutton and a Wall Street financier who was described as “probably the most quoted man on Wall Street” by Forbes magazine in 1955. Loeb created the awards to encourage and support reporting on business and finance that would inform and protect the private investor and the general public. In 1973, stewardship of the awards transferred to UCLA Anderson School of Management.
The 2026 competition drew 42 finalists across 13 competitive categories, recognizing reporting and storytelling that advanced public understanding of business, finance and the economy. Winners will be announced live on October 8, 2026, at the Loeb Awards Banquet and Celebration at Capitale in New York City. The ceremony will be hosted by Tyler Mathisen, a former CNBC anchor. Stephen Engelberg of ProPublica will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Marcelo Prince of The Wall Street Journal will receive the Lawrence Minard Editor Award.
