George W. Bush attends Obama Presidential Center dedication in Chicago

George W. Bush joined former Presidents Joe Biden and Bill Clinton at the Obama Presidential Center dedication ceremony in Chicago on June 18, 2026, marking a rare gathering of three former chief executives to celebrate the opening of Barack Obama’s presidential museum.

The invitation-only dedication ceremony on the South Side of Chicago drew an extraordinary mix of political figures, celebrities, and musicians. Performers including Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, Bono, John Legend, Eddie Vedder, and Common took the stage throughout the afternoon at the 19.3-acre campus in Jackson Park.

Michelle Obama delivered remarks directly to her husband, highlighting his eight years in office. “Eight years in the crucible and not once did you melt in the heat,” she said, referencing his work on the Affordable Care Act, marriage equality, and the raid that led to the killing of Osama bin Laden. “You made the hardest job in the world look like a walk in this beautiful park.”

Former Vice President Kamala Harris attended the event, along with former first ladies Jill Biden, Laura Bush, and Hillary Clinton. The dedication ceremony was livestreamed, with thousands more watching from a nearby park. Notable attendees included California Governor Gavin Newsom, civil rights leaders Andrew Young and Al Sharpton, Oprah Winfrey, and former world leaders including Germany’s Angela Merkel and Canada’s Justin Trudeau.

The Obama Presidential Center opens to the general public on June 19, 2026—Juneteenth—following the dedication ceremony. The nearly 20-acre campus in Jackson Park, near where Obama began his political career, includes a towering museum covering both the political and personal dimensions of the nation’s first Black president and first lady, according to the AP. The center also features a Chicago Public Library branch, a playground, athletic facilities, and public gathering spaces.

The center is expected to attract more than 1 million visitors annually. General admission tickets are sold out through the end of October, though tens of thousands have already toured the campus during preview periods. The facility is adjacent to the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry and near the University of Chicago.

The museum’s tower design depicts four hands coming together in solidarity. One side features 5-foot-tall concrete capital letters from Obama’s 2015 speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery march, beginning with the words “You are America.”
