UFC President Dana White pushed back against commentator Joe Rogan’s criticism of UFC Freedom 250, defending the historic White House event as anything but a “gimmick” after Rogan raised concerns about holding elite fights outdoors on the South Lawn.
Rogan, who will provide commentary for the event, expressed his doubts on his podcast in late May, calling the outdoor format “a gimmick” and citing worries about weather, heat, insects, and other environmental factors that could affect fighter safety and performance. White, however, took exception to that particular characterization.
“Whatever Joe Rogan’s opinions are – he said something crazy like, ‘It seems like a gimmick,'” White told Forbes in early June. “I mean, what does a gimmick mean? It’s a real fight, with real stakes.” White emphasized that the card features two title fights: UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria unifying the division against interim champion Justin Gaethje, and former two-division champion Alex Pereira facing Cyril Gane for the interim heavyweight title.
White was careful to note his respect for Rogan as a longtime collaborator and friend. “Joe Rogan is a grown ass man who has his own opinions on different things – and yes, we are really good friends,” White said. “I don’t call him and say, ‘What are you doing? What are you talking about bugs?’ I’m talking about bugs, too. These are all real things that come into play that night of the fight.”
The UFC chief acknowledged that environmental concerns—heat, insects, and unpredictable weather—are legitimate issues for an outdoor event. However, he argued that the historical significance and stakes of the fights themselves make the event far more than a publicity stunt. “When you talk about a gimmick, there’s absolutely nothing gimmicky about this event,” White said. “We’re celebrating 250 years of America, we’re gonna have all the representatives of the military there, every fight on that card means something with who wins or loses that night, and you know, like the most historical sporting event in American history. Far from a gimmick.”
White also highlighted the career implications for fighters, noting that a victory for Pereira would mark his third world title win, potentially elevating him above Jon Jones on the all-time greatest fighter list. The event, scheduled for June 14 on President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday, is expected to cost around $60 million and will not turn a profit, according to TKO president Mark Shapiro.
Despite his reservations, Rogan confirmed he will be part of the three-person commentary booth for the event on Paramount+. White made clear that he doesn’t attempt to silence or pressure commentators and analysts who voice concerns or opinions, saying they’re entitled to their own views regardless of whether he agrees.
