Jon Stewart skewers Trump for storming out of Meet the Press interview

Jon Stewart mocked President Donald Trump last night for storming out of a Meet the Press interview, calling the encounter his “worst nightmare” and describing it as “the hissy-fit of an incredibly fragile man-baby.”

Trump walked out of the NBC interview on June 7 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, after moderator Kristen Welker repeatedly fact-checked his false claims about rigged elections. When Welker pressed him for evidence that California’s gubernatorial race was rigged, Trump called her “crooked” and “stupid,” then removed his microphone and left the set.

On Monday’s episode of The Daily Show, Stewart dissected the walkout with sharp precision. “The interview began like other interviews with the president, with a reasonable question, ridiculous answer” about the war in Iran, Stewart said. But when Welker brought up Trump’s campaign promise not to start new wars, the situation shifted. Trump had repeatedly claimed during his 2024 campaign that the U.S. would not enter new wars under his leadership—a promise contradicted by his administration’s military actions.

“But this reporter on this day had the temerity to mention to Donald Trump that, well, actually, he did say that all the time,” Stewart recounted. “She just lit the fuse on the bulls— bomb.” Stewart then played a montage showing Trump’s own campaign trail statements before the president repeated his debunked claims about the 2020 election being rigged.

Stewart characterized Trump’s response as a predictable pattern. “He went to it, the fail-safe—in case of journalism, break glass. The EpiPen in case you’ve been stung by reality,” Stewart said, describing the interview pivot as Trump’s standard deflection tactic. The comedian suggested Trump faced a choice: either reckon with how his voter-fraud claims have repeatedly failed in court, or deploy what Stewart called his “second option: smoke bomb”—referring to Trump’s abrupt exit from the set.

Trump later gave an unusual explanation for his behavior. He said he had “just did an interview with NBC fake news. Because it was raining, I got a little bit angry at them.” This claim drew Stewart’s particular ire. “Donald Trump didn’t storm out because of the rain,” Stewart concluded. “He stormed out because he was challenged, not because he was distracted. So maybe it’s time we stop making excuses for that man in order to preserve access to his constant bulls—.”

The interview itself lasted nearly an hour before Trump ended it. Welker, who traveled to Wisconsin to conduct the exclusive sit-down, had pressed Trump on multiple topics—his claims about election fraud, his “anti-weaponization” fund, and contradictions between his campaign promises and his administration’s military actions. Each time she sought evidence or clarification, Trump grew more combative.

Stewart’s monologue reflected broader media criticism of the interview. Fact-checkers and journalists noted that Trump made numerous unsubstantiated claims during the exchange, from assertions about California’s election integrity to his denial of his own “no new wars” rhetoric. NBC News, FactCheck.org, and other outlets published detailed fact-checks of Trump’s statements in the days following the broadcast.
