Melinda French Gates pledges $215M to women’s health, menopause care

Melinda French Gates pledged $215 million to women’s health initiatives, bringing her total philanthropic commitment to the sector to more than $600 million in the past two years. The announcement, made June 4, 2026, reflects her expanded focus on women’s reproductive and midlife health through Pivotal, the organization she founded to accelerate social progress for women and families.

The funding targets three critical areas: contraceptive access, maternal care, and menopause care—the latter marking French Gates’ first major investment in midlife health. She told the Associated Press that women’s health is the cornerstone of her work through Pivotal. “It’s just blaringly obvious that women’s health is fundamental—she has to be well to do well in life,” French Gates said.

The World Economic Forum reports that women’s health receives only 2% of private healthcare funding globally, despite women comprising half the population. This funding gap has left conditions like menopause, endometriosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome severely under-researched and underfunded. Research shows that women experience higher rates of illness and disability than men throughout their lives and spend an average of nine years in poor health, often during their most productive working and family-raising years.

The $215 million will be distributed through Pivotal Philanthropies to specific partners and initiatives. The Menopause Society will receive $10 million to educate healthcare practitioners and expand outreach in areas where menopause care is critically limited. Co-Impact will receive $40 million to support locally led organizations embedding mental health into maternal and primary care systems, with a focus on Africa. An additional $50 million will support women’s health research through Wellcome Leap, an organization accelerating breakthroughs in years rather than decades.

Dr. Stephanie Faubion, medical director of The Menopause Society and director of the Mayo Clinic’s Center for Women’s Health, said the United States currently has about 6,000 counties where patients have critically low access to menopause-competent clinicians. “Menopause remains one of the most overlooked and underserved areas in medicine, and The Menopause Society believes women deserve better,” Faubion said. “We’re ready to make those changes with the support of donors like Pivotal.”

French Gates stepped away from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2024 after two decades to focus her philanthropic efforts through Pivotal. She emphasized that philanthropy’s role is to shine light on neglected societal problems and demonstrate ways to make progress that can attract other donors and government funding. “The role of philanthropy, in my opinion, is to look at some of these societal problems that have been left behind, and shine light on them, show ways of making progress so you can then crowd in other donors and ultimately crowd in government funding,” she said.

Faubion noted that the substantial size of French Gates’ gift is important, but the attention it brings may be even more crucial. “It shows that somebody like Melinda Gates and Pivotal feel that this is an important issue,” Faubion said. “It will illuminate the gaps that are still there and it makes people not only aware, but maybe motivated to take some action.”
