Justin Thomas shoots 67 at BMW Championship, fights for Tour Championship spot

Justin Thomas shot a 3-under 67 in the opening round of the 2026 BMW Championship on Thursday, posting four birdies on the back nine to stay alive in his fight for a Tour Championship spot at East Lake next week.

Entering the event 44th in FedExCup points, Thomas knows the stakes are existential. The BMW Championship is the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and only the top 30 finishers advance to the Tour Championship. “It feels like it’s the last tournament of my life,” Thomas told Golf Channel after his round. “It’s play well or the season’s over.”

The journey to Bellerive has been unconventional for the 2019 BMW champion. Thomas underwent back surgery in November and began his 2026 season by shooting 79-79 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March. Since then, he has posted only two top-10 finishes, though he has avoided the cut line at every event. His T-47 finish last week at TPC Southwind in Memphis left him searching for answers.

Thomas practiced intensely on Monday in preparation for the BMW Championship, but the session backfired emotionally. “It was, honestly, a pretty terrible day, to be perfectly honest,” he said, describing how he left the range in a worse mental state than when he arrived. His father, Mike, suggested he cut the session short, but Thomas pushed through until he felt he had no choice but to reset.

The breakthrough came Wednesday on the practice range, where Thomas found something with his swing motion—a dramatic improvement from just 48 hours prior. “I wouldn’t have guessed it on Monday or even Tuesday that I’d be here but that’s golf,” he said. “You wait to get into a rhythm and you build from there.”

His opening-round 67 put him three shots off the early lead and gave him momentum heading into Friday’s second round. Thomas is one of 17 players in the field who competed in the 2018 PGA Championship at Bellerive, where he finished tied for sixth alongside current co-leader Gary Woodland.

The pressure is immense. Thomas acknowledged earlier this week that despite knowing there will be more golf after the BMW Championship, the event feels final. His comeback from back surgery has been a grind—only two top-10 finishes in what he describes as “a pretty average season”—but making the Tour Championship would represent a meaningful accomplishment under the circumstances.

With no cut in place this week, Thomas has at least three more rounds to secure his spot in the final 30. His opening performance suggests he may have found the form he needs.
