Whole Foods recalls Cabricharme cheese for undeclared egg across seven states

Whole Foods cheese allergen recall: Whole Foods Market of Austin, TX announced on September 11 that it is recalling Fromagerie Coop de Mean Cabricharme cheese because the product contains undeclared egg lysozyme, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says.

The FDA notice says the Cabricharme was sold in the specialty cheese department at 18 Whole Foods Market stores in Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island, and that affected product has been removed from shelves.

Whole Foods’ company announcement, posted to the FDA recall page, says the recalled items include Formagerie Coop de Mean Cabricharme Raw Milk, Aged 60 days (PLU 57953) and Belgian Cabricharme (PLU 54670), with “all dates up to and including 10/7/2026” listed as best-by coverage for several stores.

The notice states the mislabeling was discovered by a store team member and that “no illnesses have been reported to date.” It urges customers who bought the item to destroy it or return it for a full refund with a valid receipt; a Whole Foods customer service phone number is provided in the announcement.

Food-industry sources the FDA cites note that lysozyme is an egg-white enzyme sometimes used in cheese production to prevent bacterial faults during aging. Scientific reviews describe lysozyme as a known egg allergen and a preservative used to prevent “late blowing” in some cheeses.

For shoppers with egg allergies the recall matters because the ingredient is not listed on the scale labels; the FDA warning highlights the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if someone with egg sensitivity consumes the product.

Whole Foods removed the affected cheese from shelf displays after the store discovery, according to the company notice on the FDA recall page; the announcement gives a consumer hotline for questions and an email address for media inquiries.

This recall follows other supermarket product-removal notices this month and underscores how labeling errors can trigger multi-state actions and customer alerts in specialty departments.
