Urgent recall pulls 12,000 adult bed rails amid fatal entrapment concerns

Federal safety investigators have ordered a recall of more than 12,000 Vive Health adult bed rails after finding a risk that users can become trapped between the rail and mattress — a condition the agency says can lead to suffocation. The alert adds to a wave of similar recalls and has immediate implications for caregivers and anyone using bedside support rails.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says about 12,355 Vive Health bed rails are included in the recall because they can create an entrapment hazard when installed on a bed. The agency noted the rails also lack the required hazard warning labels.

Products covered were sold online at Amazon.com and ViveHealth.com from August 2023 through December 2025, with listed prices between $45 and $80. The recall applies only to rails purchased after Aug. 21, 2023.

The two recalled models are identified as LVA1024 and LVA3031BLK. LVA1024 is described as a white-framed rail with a black handle, measuring roughly 20 inches wide by 32 inches tall; LVA3031BLK is a smaller black-framed unit at about 13 inches by 18 inches.

According to the CPSC, a person can become trapped inside the rail or between the rail and the mattress, creating a risk of death by asphyxiation. The commission is urging consumers to stop using the product immediately and contact Vive Health for a full refund. No injuries or deaths linked to this specific recall have been reported so far.

  • Where bought: Amazon.com and ViveHealth.com
  • When sold: August 2023–December 2025 (only purchases after Aug. 21, 2023 affected)
  • Price range: $45–$80
  • Models: LVA1024 (20″ x 32″), LVA3031BLK (13″ x 18″)
  • Risk: Entrapment between rail and mattress; missing hazard labels

Practical steps for owners and caregivers:

  • Stop using the recalled rail immediately and remove it from the bed.
  • Keep products out of reach of the person who depends on them for sleep or mobility until a safe replacement is obtained.
  • Contact Vive Health directly to request a refund or more information; the CPSC recall notice lists company contact details and next steps.
  • Check other bedside equipment for similar hazards and follow any recall guidance from manufacturers or the CPSC.

This Vive Health action is one of several recent bed-rail recalls. Last month the CPSC announced a recall of roughly 26,200 Sangohe-brand portable adult bed rails sold through major online retailers for the same entrapment concern, and a separate recall in December covered about 12,000 JOKOSIS rails. Earlier recalls involving other manufacturers, including a larger recall tied to a fatality, have focused regulators’ attention on bed-rail safety nationwide.

The pattern has renewed scrutiny of how bedside assist products are designed, labeled and sold. The CPSC requires clear hazard warnings on devices where gaps can form between rail and mattress; failure to include such labels not only raises risk to users but can prompt regulatory action and expanded recalls.

For now, health professionals and family caregivers should inspect beds used by older adults or people with limited mobility, verify that rails meet current safety guidance, and follow the CPSC’s recall instructions if a recalled model is found. Staying informed and removing risky devices quickly can reduce the chance of serious harm.
