McConnell recovering in rehab after June fall, still away from Senate floor

Sen. Mitch McConnell is recovering at a rehabilitation center after being hospitalized for nearly a month following a fall at his Washington, D.C., home on June 14, according to a statement released July 12. The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican said he was briefly unconscious after the fall and sustained minor injuries but will not return to the Senate floor “quite yet.”

In his statement, McConnell detailed the results of extensive medical testing. “My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion,” he said. “I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital.” The Office of the Attending Physician confirmed these findings, stating that evaluation found “no fractures, cardiac abnormalities, stroke, tumor, or hemorrhage.”

Early in his hospitalization, McConnell developed a mild case of pneumonia, which responded rapidly to antibiotic treatment, according to the physician’s office. The remainder of his hospital stay focused on physical therapy and strategies to reduce his risk of future falls. He has been medically cleared to continue fully participating in an intensive physical therapy program.

McConnell moved from hospital care to a rehabilitation facility where he said he will “keep regaining my strength.” He did not specify when he would return to the Senate floor. “As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time,” he said. “And on the advice of my doctors, I won’t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet.”

The senator said he remains engaged with his legislative staff on appropriations, midterm politics, and constituent services. “I still have unfinished business to complete on your behalf, and I have every intention of finishing the job you elected me to do,” McConnell stated, adding that he intends to serve out his current term, which ends in January 2027.

McConnell’s extended absence comes after weeks of public silence about his hospitalization, which sparked widespread speculation about his health. The physician’s office noted that the fall was related to mobility issues stemming from childhood polio. McConnell acknowledged in his statement that members of his generation “often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older,” explaining the delay in providing details about his condition.
