Stock market futures are edging lower on July 16 as semiconductor stocks face renewed selling pressure, a day after chip shares sank on an inflation surprise that caught investors off guard.
Nasdaq-100 futures fell 0.58%, while S&P 500 futures slipped 0.16%, reflecting weakness concentrated in the chip sector. The moves extend a choppy stretch for semiconductor stocks that has frustrated investors despite strong earnings from major players in the industry.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing posted its fifth straight quarter of record earnings earlier this week, yet the news failed to arrest the selloff. Shares in Sandisk, Western Digital, and Micron Technology were among the biggest losers in premarket trading on July 16, according to the Wall Street Journal. South Korea’s Kospi index fell more than 6% as SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics shares tumbled.
The semiconductor weakness on July 15 followed a surprise drop in U.S. inflation data. June’s consumer price index came in at 3.5% annually, below the 3.8% forecast, according to multiple sources. While the softer inflation reading benefited Treasury bonds and broad stock indexes, it triggered profit-taking in chip stocks that had surged earlier in the week on AI-related optimism.
Investors have been whipsawed by conflicting signals in recent weeks. Earlier in July, semiconductor stocks tumbled on concerns about AI spending sustainability and valuations, erasing more than $1 trillion in market value at one point, according to reports from June and early July. That weakness gave way to a brief recovery as traders reassessed earnings prospects, only to reverse again as the inflation data sparked fresh repositioning.
The current pullback is occurring amid a busy earnings season and mounting geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, which have also weighed on sentiment. Oil prices have remained relatively stable despite the latest headlines, but broader market sentiment reflects caution as traders digest multiple competing factors.
