McConnell remains hospitalized as Beshear urges health update

Senator Mitch McConnell remains hospitalized more than three weeks after being admitted on June 14, as Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear urged the 84-year-old Republican to provide a public health update on his condition.

Beshear sent a letter to McConnell on July 8 requesting that the senator “fully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health.” The Democratic governor’s call for transparency came as McConnell’s office continued to release minimal information about his hospitalization, citing only that he “continues to improve” while remaining in the hospital.

McConnell’s team has been protective of details surrounding the hospitalization. His spokesperson confirmed on July 2 that the senator remains hospitalized and is “working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session,” according to CNN. McConnell’s office has not disclosed a medical reason for the admission or specifics on his health status beyond those general statements.

The lack of transparency has fueled speculation and rumors online about McConnell’s condition. In response, several high-profile Republicans released statements saying they had recently spoken with the senator. Senate Majority Leader John Thune spoke with McConnell by phone on Monday and had “a lengthy and substantive conversation that covered a variety of topics including national security,” according to his spokesperson. Senate GOP Whip John Barrasso spoke with McConnell for about 20 minutes and said the Kentucky Republican “was fully engaged and is eager to get back to the Senate,” according to a statement from Barrasso’s office.

CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings also posted on social media that he spoke with McConnell and said the senator’s “voice sounded strong” and that he was keeping up with the news. Jennings reported that McConnell told him he was “feeling OK — obviously well enough to call me on the phone.”

McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, was traveling in China when the hospitalization occurred. A spokesperson told CNN that “the Senator’s health did not warrant an immediate return to the US,” and that Chao was on a long-planned trip supporting her family’s philanthropic endeavors.

The senator has faced mounting health challenges in recent years. In March 2023, McConnell suffered a concussion and fractured rib after falling at a Washington hotel, missing several weeks of work. He also experienced multiple episodes of freezing during public appearances in 2023. In February 2026, McConnell checked himself into the hospital after experiencing flu-like symptoms and spent eight days receiving treatment, according to NBC News and other outlets.

McConnell is a childhood polio survivor. He has not cast a vote on the Senate floor since June 11, and the Senate has been in recess since June 29, with members not scheduled to return to Washington until July 13, according to CNN.
