Democrat Cyndi Munson will face Republican Mike Mazzei in Oklahoma’s gubernatorial general election on November 3, 2026, after Mazzei narrowly won the GOP runoff on August 25. The Tulsa businessman defeated Attorney General Gentner Drummond by 2,020 votes, capturing 50.27% of the vote to Drummond’s 49.73% in a tight Republican primary contest.
Munson, the Oklahoma House Minority Leader, secured the Democratic nomination decisively in June, winning her primary race with approximately 75% of the vote. She became the first Asian-American woman elected to the Oklahoma Legislature when she won a special election in 2015 and has served as Democratic leader since 2022.

Mazzei received significant backing from President Trump, who endorsed him on Truth Social and released campaign videos supporting his candidacy. Trump held a call on Mazzei’s behalf on the eve of the runoff that drew 38,000 participants, according to the candidate’s campaign. The endorsement proved decisive in a race where Drummond, the sitting state attorney general, had been considered the frontrunner.
The general election will determine who succeeds Republican Kevin Stitt, the current governor who is term-limited and cannot seek a third term. Political forecasters rate the race as heavily favoring Republicans, with projections showing a 65.2% Republican to 34.8% Democratic vote split.

Munson has centered her campaign on raising the minimum wage for Oklahomans, providing pay raises for state employees, and investing in public schools. She is a first-generation college graduate who previously worked with Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma supporting leadership programs in low-income schools.
The race also includes four independent candidates on the November ballot. Mazzei and Munson now shift focus from their respective primary victories to the general election campaign, with Mazzei’s narrow runoff victory setting the stage for a closely watched matchup in a solidly Republican state.
