Global solar power capacity crossed 3 terawatts in early 2026, marking a historic milestone in renewable energy deployment. According to BloombergNEF, the world reached this threshold faster than any previous terawatt milestone—the third took just 19 months to add, compared to nearly seven decades for the first terawatt and about two years for the second.
The acceleration reflects the dramatic pace of solar installations worldwide. In 2025 alone, the global solar industry installed a record 664 gigawatts of new capacity, continuing a streak of record-breaking years. This translates to solar now supplying approximately 9 percent of global electricity demand, according to SolarPower Europe’s June 2026 report, a figure that has tripled in just five years.

China led this global expansion, adding 315 gigawatts of new solar capacity in 2025—more than half of all new solar deployed worldwide that year. The country’s dominance reflects decades of investment in manufacturing and deployment infrastructure, cementing its position as the undisputed leader in solar power generation.
The rapid growth has been fueled by falling costs and rising electricity demand. Data center power consumption surged 26 percent in 2026 as artificial intelligence applications multiplied, creating new urgency for renewable energy sources. Additionally, solar’s cost-competitiveness against fossil fuels has made it the preferred choice for new capacity additions globally, with grid modernization efforts underway to integrate the growing renewable supply.

The milestone comes as solar’s role in the global energy mix continues to expand. BloombergNEF projects that global solar capacity will exceed 9 terawatts by 2036, meaning today’s 3-terawatt achievement could appear modest in retrospect. The research firm also forecasts that solar will become the world’s largest electricity generator by 2032, surpassing both coal and natural gas.
Despite the record pace, growth is expected to moderate slightly in 2026. According to BloombergNEF, approximately 649 gigawatts of new solar capacity is projected to be installed this year, a small decline from 2025’s record. China’s deployment is anticipated to slow following market reforms, though it will still lead global additions. Meanwhile, the technical efficiency of solar installations continues to improve, with innovations like flat-panel systems achieving output above their rated capacity in some conditions.
