Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called President Trump’s Iran deal a “total, utter disaster” on Wednesday after Trump declared the ceasefire with Iran “over” at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. Schumer’s statement marks the latest Democratic criticism of an agreement that has unraveled just weeks after its announcement.
“Trump’s so-called ‘deal’ to end hostilities with Iran has turned into total, utter disaster,” Schumer said in his statement. “This is what happens when an incompetent president launches a war with no objective, no plan, and no exit strategy — you lose.”
Trump made his announcement Wednesday at the NATO summit, saying the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran is finished. “I think it’s over. I don’t want a deal with them anymore. They’re scum,” Trump said. Stock markets dropped and oil prices climbed to more than $75 a barrel following his comments.
The 60-day ceasefire between the United States and Iran, announced in mid-June, appeared fragile from the start. Schumer has been consistently critical of the agreement, which he argued left Iran in a stronger position while costing Americans economically and militarily.
The Deal’s Terms and Schumer’s Core Criticism
According to Vice President JD Vance, Iran could have access to a $300 billion reconstruction fund under the peace agreement if it honored its obligations. Vance confirmed the figure during a CBS News interview on June 15, saying the funds would be “funded by the Gulf coast coalition, so long as they honor their end of the obligation.”
Schumer argued in June that Iran “took Trump to the cleaners” with the agreement. “Iran doesn’t have to cut off support for its terrorist proxies. Iran doesn’t have to give up ballistic missile production. Iran doesn’t have to make any hard commitments on its nuclear program now,” Schumer said in floor remarks on June 18. “But Iran does get to rake in billions of dollars in oil sales, hundreds of billions of dollars in reconstruction aid, and God knows how much more in potential fees Trump may let it impose on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.”
The Senate Democratic leader emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the world’s oil supply travels, is now “under greater Iranian control than before the war began,” according to his earlier statements.
Schumer said the American people are “paying the price” for Trump’s failure. “The American people are paying the price for Trump’s total failure in Iran. Our troops are back in harm’s way and high gas costs are continuing to punish working families,” Schumer said Wednesday.
The Trump administration requested $67.1 billion in emergency defense spending last month to replenish weapons and munitions used during the four-month conflict, which began February 28. Schumer called for serious negotiations and said the administration must “comply with the majorities in both chambers who voted to end this war, and deliver the relief American families desperately need.”
