Count Binface to challenge Farage in Clacton by-election as rivals stand aside

Count Binface, the British comedian and perennial novelty candidate, will challenge Nigel Farage in the Clacton by-election after Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party, and Restore Britain all ruled out standing in the contest.

Farage resigned as MP for Clacton on July 7 to trigger the by-election, framing it as a “people versus the establishment” contest. The Reform UK leader said constituents should judge his actions as he faces a parliamentary investigation into undeclared financial gifts, including a £5 million donation from billionaire donor Christopher Harborne that he did not declare before becoming an MP.

By announcing his resignation, Farage suspended the standards inquiry, though it could resume if he wins and returns to Parliament. The move left Binface—the alter ego of comedian Jonathan David Harvey—as the only confirmed challenger to contest the seat.

Binface, whose character is described as an “independent space warrior” who wears a large bin on his head, has become a fixture in UK elections. Harvey previously ran against former Prime Ministers Theresa May in 2017 as Lord Buckethead and Rishi Sunak in 2024 under the Binface persona. The character’s satirical campaigns blend political commentary with theatrical absurdity.

Labour called Farage’s resignation a “circus” and accused him of “desperately trying to change the subject” from financial scrutiny. A Labour spokesperson said the party would not participate and that “Farage should let the parliamentary investigation into his finances run its course and face the consequences.” Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said her party would not take part in what she called “the fake election, which Nigel Farage is causing to distract people.”

The Green Party initially left the decision to its local members but later confirmed through MP Hannah Spencer that local party members had decided not to field a candidate. Restore Britain, founded by MP Rupert Lowe after his suspension from Reform, said it would not stand in this election but would do so if a second by-election were triggered by the standards inquiry.

Farage won Clacton in the 2024 general election with a majority of more than 8,000 votes, beating the Conservatives into second place. Reform sources indicated they want the by-election held quickly, with the contest potentially scheduled as early as August under parliamentary rules.
