Mitch McConnell remains hospitalized over 3 weeks after medical emergency

Senator Mitch McConnell remains hospitalized more than three weeks after a medical emergency on June 14, with his office confirming he continues his recovery but declining to disclose the specific nature of his condition.

The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican was admitted to the hospital on June 14. Emergency dispatch audio released this week reveals that paramedics responded to his Washington, D.C. residence that morning for an “unconscious” person, with responders performing CPR for a “cardiac arrest,” according to reporting from Salon and NBC News.

McConnell’s office issued only a brief statement at the time of his admission, saying he was “receiving excellent care” without providing details about his condition. In an updated statement this week, a spokesperson said McConnell “continues to improve” and is working with his Senate staff on Kentucky and Senate matters, but again did not address the medical emergency itself.

The lack of transparency has left the public and media relying on emergency dispatch audio and brief reassurances to understand what occurred. McConnell has not voted since June 11 and has been out of public view for the entire hospitalization period.

This is McConnell’s second significant hospitalization in six months. In February 2026, he spent eight days in the hospital after experiencing “flu-like symptoms,” according to his office. McConnell, a childhood polio survivor, has faced a series of health challenges in recent years, including multiple public falls and episodes of appearing to freeze during Senate proceedings.

The senator announced in February 2025 that he would not seek reelection and is expected to complete his term in January 2027. His extended hospitalization has raised questions about his Senate duties during the recovery period, though his office has indicated he remains engaged with legislative work from the hospital.
