Bill Clinton warns of threats to democracy in July 4th statement

Bill Clinton warned that American democracy faces serious threats in a July 4, 2026 statement marking the nation’s 250th Independence Day, delivering one of the most forceful critiques of the Trump administration from a former president in recent years.

In a lengthy statement released on the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Clinton described the current moment as “another period of deep division, renewed questions about America’s future and role in the world, and serious threats to our own institutions and to our democracy itself.”

Without naming Trump directly, Clinton detailed specific accusations against those “in charge.” He alleged that “the people in charge have unleashed masked agents on American communities to seize people from their homes, workplaces, and the street.” He also charged that the administration “started an unconstitutional war on a whim, with no clear objectives or exit strategy, and zero regard for the consequences to the lives of millions of people around the world.”

Clinton further argued that the current leadership had weaponized government institutions. “With the help of lifetime appointees to the Supreme Court and a compliant Congress, they have weaponized government to settle personal scores, prosecute enemies, stamp out free speech, and made the federal government a new profit center for themselves and their allies,” he stated, according to his official statement released by the Clinton Foundation.

The former president criticized economic policies he characterized as favoring the wealthy. “Their New Deal is socialism for the super-rich (and their own enrichment) even if it means increasing poverty, inequality, and illness at home and around the world,” Clinton said. He also accused the administration of attempting to rewrite history and politicize the military, claiming they “want to rewrite history to ignore and outright deny our past flaws while banning books that say otherwise from our libraries. And they select even our military leaders based on their version of political correctness over ability.”

Despite his stark warnings, Clinton framed the moment within America’s longer historical arc. He noted that throughout U.S. history, “at every major turning point, we have chosen inclusion over division,” citing the preservation of the Union during the Civil War, the abolition of slavery, and the advancement of civil and women’s rights as examples. “Our Founders were wise when they gave us our mission to form a more perfect union,” Clinton wrote. “They knew America would never be perfect but could always be better.”

Clinton concluded with a call to action, urging Americans to defend democratic institutions. “There is still nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured by what’s right with America,” he said, pointing to citizens voting, helping neighbors, donating to charities, and serving their communities. He called on Americans to “stand up, showing up, and speaking out for our democracy,” warning that “there’s nothing guaranteed about our democracy. We have to fight for it, defend it, and keep it alive.”
