American Airlines will launch nonstop service between Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Tokyo Narita International Airport starting March 27, 2027, marking the airline’s return to the long-haul transpacific route after a seven-year absence and expanding its new long haul routes from the Midwest hub.
The daily, year-round service will operate using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner configured with 30 Flagship Business seats and 21 Premium Economy seats, according to the airline’s official announcement. The route represents American’s 11th long-haul destination from Chicago O’Hare, part of a broader expansion strategy at the hub.
American originally served the Chicago-Tokyo Narita route from 1998 until it ended service in January 2020. The airline had operated the route for more than two decades before discontinuing it, leaving Japan Airlines as the sole carrier on the corridor. Now, American’s return comes as the carrier rebuilds its competitive position at its major Chicago hub.
The service will operate under a Pacific Joint Business agreement between American and Japan Airlines, allowing the carriers to coordinate schedules and pricing on routes between North America and East Asia. CEO Robert Isom said at a celebration of the announcement at Chicago O’Hare that the new route reflects “our continued commitment to make our hub stronger, broaden choices for customers and keep Chicago competitive on the world stage.”
The partnership with Japan Airlines provides American customers with convenient onward connections from Tokyo Narita to popular Asian destinations including Bangkok, Singapore, Taipei, and Ho Chi Minh City. AAdvantage frequent flyer members can earn miles and loyalty points when traveling on Japan Airlines flights, and status members gain access to lounges, extra baggage allowance, and other elevated benefits.
The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is engineered for long-haul efficiency, with a range up to 8,300 nautical miles, making it well-suited for the approximately 6,300-mile transpacific journey. American has configured the aircraft with lie-flat Flagship Business seating and premium economy options, aligning with the airline’s elevated customer experience strategy across its international network from Chicago.
The Tokyo announcement comes alongside two additional new routes from Chicago O’Hare: American will begin service to Charlottesville, Virginia in November 2026 and to Ontario, California in December 2026. These additions reflect American’s broader investment in its Chicago hub, which the airline has rebuilt with more than 30 new destinations added in recent years.
