DTE outage leaves 219,000 without power in Michigan after storms

Overnight thunderstorms across Michigan left more than 14,000 residents without power as of Friday morning, July 3, 2026, with the majority of DTE outages concentrated in the southwest Lower Peninsula.

Severe weather developed overnight Thursday, July 2, bringing damaging winds and heavy rainfall to the region. Barry County, Kalamazoo County, and Allegan County accounted for approximately 10,600 of the total outages reported across Michigan.

South Haven recorded a wind gust of 62 mph, according to National Weather Service reports. Cities across the affected region also reported up to an inch of rain, with South Haven experiencing 0.5-inch hail and Bellevue, northeast of Battle Creek, recording 0.75-inch hail.

The outages follow a week of weather challenges in Michigan. Earlier in the week, extreme heat had strained the power grid, causing smaller outages on July 1, when roughly 5,000 DTE Energy customers in Warren lost power after equipment failure at a substation. On June 12, 2026, a separate severe storm system had knocked out power to over 24,000 DTE customers across Metro Detroit.

DTE Energy urged customers to stay at least 20 feet away from downed power lines and to report any hazards immediately. Customers can check outage status and restoration times through the DTE Energy outage map. To report outages or downed lines, customers can call 800-477-4747 or use the online reporting portal. For immediate safety threats, residents should call 911.

The string of outages reflects the vulnerability of Michigan’s power infrastructure to severe weather. Power outages hit multiple states as heat and storms strike July 3, indicating the broader regional weather pattern affecting utilities across the Midwest.
