FBI surges 260 analysts to Georgia 2020 election probe in Fulton County

The FBI is directing 260 analysts to its investigation of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia’s Fulton County, according to a memo obtained by the Associated Press that calls for the agency to “surge” personnel to assist with what it described as a “priority” investigation ordered by FBI Director Kash Patel.

The memo, sent to all FBI field offices, requests each office contribute analysts to reach a total of 260 personnel. Large field offices are being asked to provide eight analysts each, while smaller and medium-sized offices must dedicate between three and five, according to CBS News. Each analyst is tasked with reviewing an estimated 708 records, with work to be completed by July 17.

The analysts, described as “tactical intel” staffers, typically handle day-to-day casework such as running license plates, conducting open-source checks on investigation subjects, performing phone analysis, preparing subpoenas, and reviewing subpoena returns, according to CBS News reporting.

Background: The January Seizure and Ongoing Investigation

The personnel surge represents an escalation of an investigation that began earlier this year. In January 2026, FBI agents executed a search warrant at Fulton County’s election headquarters near Atlanta, seizing hundreds of boxes containing 2020 ballots and other election documents, according to the Associated Press. A federal judge in May denied Fulton County’s request to return the seized materials, ruling the Justice Department could retain the records.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly made false claims that election officials in heavily Democratic Fulton County manipulated ballot counts in 2020. According to the Associated Press, Georgia’s 2020 votes were counted three times—including once by hand—and each count affirmed Democrat Joe Biden’s win. Trump lost Georgia by 11,799 votes.

The Justice Department has stated it is investigating “irregularities that occurred during the 2020 presidential election in the County,” according to AP reporting. The case was referred to the FBI by Kurt Olsen, a lawyer who previously fought to overturn the 2020 election results and now works for the Justice Department investigating alleged conspiracies involving Obama and Biden-era officials, according to CBS News.
