Araghchi warns Iran will respond to any threat against leadership

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on July 1 that any threat against Iran’s people or leadership will receive “an immediate powerful response,” escalating rhetoric as tensions remain high despite a recent ceasefire agreement with the United States.

Araghchi posted his statement on the social media platform X in response to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz’s declaration that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was “marked for death.” The Iranian foreign minister said the terms of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Washington and Tehran were “crystal clear and public for all to see.”

The warning underscores fragile conditions under the Islamabad MoU, which entered into force on June 18, 2026, after being electronically signed by U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The agreement provides a framework for ending the war that began in late February, addressing outstanding issues through negotiations including a cessation of hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon, sanctions relief, the nuclear file, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Araghchi also criticized the U.S. role in restraining Israel, stating that Trump “has committed the US to muzzling its pets in Tel Aviv,” and warned: “If they ignore their master, Iran will school them.” The comment reflected Tehran’s view that the U.S. bears responsibility for preventing Israeli military action against Iran under the terms of the memorandum.

Tensions between Iran and Israel have remained volatile even as the broader U.S.-Iran conflict moved toward diplomatic channels. Katz’s threat against Iran’s leadership marked an escalation that directly challenged the framework of the ceasefire agreement, which commits both sides to restraint and establishes a 60-day negotiation window for addressing nuclear issues and other disputes.
