House Democrats allege Freedom 250 misled donors in report

House Democrats released a 55-page report on Thursday alleging that Trump-backed Freedom 250 misled donors who intended to support America250, a congressionally chartered bipartisan initiative to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, according to The Washington Post.

Some donors received false routing and account numbers that directed their contributions to Freedom 250 instead of America250, the report states. The investigation, conducted by House Natural Resources Committee Democrats, is based on whistleblower interviews and newly obtained documents.

Rep. Jared Huffman (D-California), who oversaw the report as the committee’s top Democrat, said the evidence shows hallmarks of fraud. “I’m a lawyer, and I know better than to pronounce that a crime has been committed,” Huffman said. “But I do know the elements of fraud, and there is evidence of all those elements here.”

The report also alleges that Trump administration officials pressured donors to reallocate funds away from America250 toward Freedom 250. Some corporate executives did not understand the difference between the two organizations and were confused by the process, according to the Democrats’ findings.

America250, created by Congress a decade ago, was expected to receive $100 million in congressionally allocated funds to execute planned programming, including grants, educational initiatives, and volunteer programs. The report claims that Trump allies worked to shift $75 million of those funds away from the bipartisan initiative, leaving America250 with a significant shortfall and forcing it to seek additional private fundraising.

Freedom 250, which Trump established through executive order in December 2025, has overseen high-profile anniversary events in Washington, including a UFC fight on the White House lawn and a scheduled July 4 rally. The Trump-backed group has received substantial federal support and has displaced America250 as the administration’s preferred partner in 250th anniversary planning, according to multiple sources.

The Washington Post reported that America250 originally received a federal grant for so-called Freedom Trucks, mobile museums modeled on the American Freedom Train that toured the country from 1975 to 1976. Officials said the grant was later voluntarily transferred to Freedom 250, which now operates the trucks with what critics say is a sanitized version of the nation’s founding.

The report also alleges that Freedom 250 employed former U.S. government officials and harvested users’ data for political purposes. The House Democrats’ investigation identified what they characterize as a web of alleged corruption and pay-to-play fundraising schemes, according to The Guardian.

White House, Freedom 250, and America250 spokespeople did not immediately respond to questions about the report. Huffman said that if Democrats retake control of the House in the 2026 midterm elections, the party will pursue broader investigations with subpoena power.
