Emergency dispatch audio released this week reveals that paramedics responded to Sen. Mitch McConnell’s Washington, D.C., home on June 14 for an unconscious person experiencing a possible cardiac arrest, according to publicly obtained EMS dispatch recordings reviewed by multiple news outlets.
The audio, shared by journalist Desiree Townsend on June 30, captured a dispatcher calling for an “ALS,” or advanced life support response, and paramedics stating “CPR in progress” at McConnell’s residence. The dispatcher referenced a “cardiac arrest” call placed before 9 a.m. that morning, according to CBS News and USA Today.
McConnell’s office confirmed the same day that the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican was hospitalized but provided no details about the reason. “Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning,” his spokesman David Popp said on June 14. “He is receiving excellent care.” The office has not responded to subsequent inquiries about the dispatch audio or the nature of the emergency.
McConnell has struggled with his health in recent years. In 2023, he froze while speaking with reporters at two separate public events, appearing unable to answer questions immediately. He also suffered multiple falls that year, including one at a Washington dinner that resulted in a concussion and broken rib. Earlier in 2026, he was hospitalized for more than a week after checking himself in for “flu-like symptoms,” according to USA Today and NBC News.
The former Senate majority leader, who served as the chamber’s Republican leader from 2007 through 2024, was first elected to the Senate in 1984. He announced in February 2025 that he would retire at the end of his current term in 2027. As of late June, his office said he was recovering and actively engaged with staff, though he had not been seen publicly since his June 14 hospitalization.
