McConnell reportedly found unconscious before June hospitalization, condition unclear

Senator Mitch McConnell was found unconscious at his Washington, D.C., home before being hospitalized on June 14, according to emergency dispatch audio released this week. The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican’s condition remains unclear more than two weeks after the incident.

According to Punchbowl News and journalist Desiree Townsend, a dispatcher directed an Advanced Life Support ambulance to McConnell’s address at 8:36 a.m. on June 14. The audio recording of the emergency call has not been independently verified, and McConnell’s office has not commented on the dispatch details.

When the hospitalization was first announced that day, McConnell’s spokesperson said only that he was “receiving excellent care,” without elaborating on his condition. On June 22, the office issued a statement saying he was “working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery.” McConnell’s office has not confirmed whether he remains hospitalized or provided any update on his status since then.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said in mid-June that McConnell “is clearly dialed in to what’s going on” and is “following along with stuff we are doing this week.” However, the public has received no official confirmation of McConnell’s current condition or prognosis.

A Pattern of Health Challenges

The June hospitalization marks McConnell’s second admission to the hospital this year. In February 2026, he spent eight days in the hospital after experiencing “flu-like symptoms,” according to Politico and NBC News.

McConnell’s health has deteriorated significantly over the past three years. In March 2023, he fell at a Washington hotel and suffered a concussion and broken ribs, according to NPR and The Guardian. Later that year, he froze mid-sentence during two public appearances, each time dissociating for 20 to 30 seconds, according to The New Republic. The Capitol physician later determined he had not suffered a seizure or stroke.

In December 2024, McConnell fell again at a Senate Republican lunch, spraining his wrist and cutting his face, The New Republic reported. He also tripped and fell in a Senate building in October 2025 while walking with an aide. The New Republic notes that McConnell’s team has said he still deals with lingering effects from surviving polio as a child.

McConnell, who is not seeking reelection and whose term ends in January 2027, has refused to step down early despite his health challenges, drawing criticism from some Republican colleagues and observers concerned about gerontocracy in government.
