Trump unveils new Air Force One, a $400M Qatari jet at Joint Base Andrews

President Trump unveiled a $400 million Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar on Friday at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, marking the debut of the new Air Force One that will serve as a temporary presidential aircraft until a new fleet of Boeing planes arrives in 2028.

Trump descended the stairs from the hulking jet inside a specially constructed hangar and delivered remarks to a crowd of service members. “There will never be one like this. This is very unique. This is considered the world’s most luxurious plane,” Trump said, noting that the hangar had to be specially built to accommodate the aircraft’s size, much larger than the previous plane.

The Qatari jet, formally designated the VC-25B Bridge, has undergone extensive modifications over the past year. The aircraft was painted in red, white, and blue livery and equipped with advanced security and communications systems. According to the Air Force, the plane is “safe, secure and equipped with the most advanced technologies necessary to meet the requirements of the presidential mission.” The Air Force said it prioritized operational readiness over aesthetics, leaving the interior layout minimally changed, which means the luxury finishings, leather seats, and glossy wood paneling remain intact.

The unveiling comes one day after Trump took his final flight on the iconic Boeing 747-200 that has served as Air Force One for over 35 years. White House officials posted farewell tributes to the aging plane on social media on June 18, marking the end of an era. The two older VC-25A aircraft will soon join the active executive airlift fleet used by senior government officials for official travel, according to an Air Force spokesperson.

A Temporary Solution Amid Controversy

The Trump administration accepted the luxury jet from Qatar in May 2025 as a gift, a decision that sparked significant controversy. Democratic lawmakers called for ethics probes, and a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll reported that a majority of voters expressed concerns about the president’s acceptance of the foreign aircraft. Critics raised questions about potential conflicts of interest and national security risks posed by accepting a gift from a foreign government.

Trump has defended the decision vigorously. “Why should our military, and therefore our taxpayers, be forced to pay hundreds of millions of Dollars when they can get it for FREE from a country that wants to reward us for a job well done,” Trump posted on Truth Social last year. The Air Force secretary told Congress that retrofitting the Qatari jet would cost “probably less than $400 million,” separate from the aircraft’s estimated $400 million value as a new commercial plane.

The Qatari jet serves as a bridge aircraft while Boeing completes two new VC-25B presidential planes, which are now expected to be delivered in 2028 or later—years behind the original schedule. Trump announced Friday that the new Air Force One will lead a massive ceremonial flyover of Washington on July 4 to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday.
