SpaceX stock surged 19% on its first day of trading to close at $160.95, lifting the company’s market value above $2 trillion and prompting analysts to weigh whether the space exploration company can sustain momentum after the historic IPO.
The company priced its shares at $135 each on June 11 and raised $75 billion, the largest initial public offering ever recorded. SpaceX opened at $150 on June 12, then climbed further to close above the IPO price, with the stock reaching $201.80 by June 16, according to TradingView.
SpaceX’s debut shattered the previous record set by Saudi Aramco in 2019, when the oil giant raised $25.6 billion at a $1.7 trillion valuation. The 2026 IPO is nearly three times larger in capital raised, according to Visual Capitalist and The New York Times.
TD Securities’ Peter Haynes, the firm’s head of index and market structure, told CNBC that the IPO itself is just one milestone in a larger timeline. “The most important dates for SpaceX haven’t happened yet,” Haynes said, pointing to upcoming index rebalancing events. He highlighted July 6 as a key date when the Nasdaq will rebalance its 100 Index to reflect SpaceX’s IPO shares, followed by adjustments to other benchmarks as additional shares become freely tradable.
Wall Street opinion on the valuation remains split. Morningstar analysts said SpaceX is “significantly overvalued” ahead of the IPO, with Fortune reporting that analysts believe the stock is worth closer to $63 per share rather than the $135 IPO price. Other observers, however, point to the company’s growth potential and dominance in commercial spaceflight as justification for the premium.
The stock’s continued strength into its second week of trading—reaching $186 by Monday afternoon and climbing further by mid-week—suggests retail and institutional investors remain confident in SpaceX’s long-term prospects, even as some analysts caution that the valuation reflects speculative bets on future revenue growth.
