Amazon has claimed the top spot on the 2026 Fortune 500 list, ending Walmart’s 13-year reign as America’s largest company by revenue. The Seattle-based e-commerce and cloud giant reported $716.9 billion in revenue for 2025, narrowly surpassing Walmart’s $713.2 billion.
Amazon achieved this milestone through 12% year-over-year revenue growth, according to Fortune’s official ranking released on June 3, 2026. The company’s ascent marks only the fourth time in the 72-year history of the Fortune 500 that a new company has held the No. 1 position—following General Motors, ExxonMobil, and Walmart.
The company’s rise reflects the acceleration of e-commerce and cloud computing as dominant business models. Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud division, contributed roughly $129 billion of the total revenue, accounting for about 18% of overall sales. In the first quarter of 2026, AWS growth accelerated to 28%, its fastest pace in nearly four years, according to earnings reported in late April.
Walmart’s 13-year run at the top ended after it reported 2025 revenue of $713.2 billion, growing at a slower 5% rate year over year. The retailer, which held the No. 1 position from 2013 through 2025, now ranks second on the list. UnitedHealth Group ranks third with $447.6 billion in revenue.
Amazon debuted on the Fortune 500 in 2002 at position No. 492. The company’s path to the top reflects its diversification beyond retail into cloud services, advertising, and other business segments. First-quarter 2026 net sales reached $181.5 billion, up 17%, with operating income climbing 30% to $23.9 billion.
