Dominion Energy customers lose power across Central Virginia as severe storms strike

Dominion Energy customers across Central Virginia lost power during severe thunderstorms that swept through the region on June 12, 2026, with more than 8,400 customers in the hardest-hit areas left without electricity at the peak of the outages.

Over 3,300 Central Virginia homes and businesses were without power as of 11 p.m. Friday, according to WRIC ABC 8News. Richmond City experienced the most significant impact with 781 outages, followed by Orange County with 601 and Albemarle County with 527, the station reported.

The outages extended across the broader Northern Virginia region. More than 21,200 Dominion Energy customers in Fairfax County lost power as the thunderstorms moved through, with the heaviest concentrations in the eastern part of the county, according to FFXnow. In Alexandria, nearly 11,000 customers were without power at the peak, according to the Alexandria Brief.

The National Weather Service in Sterling issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning at 7:54 p.m. for the region, citing a line of storms capable of wind gusts up to 70 mph. Forecasters tracked the storms moving east at 45 mph, with emergency management reporting numerous downed trees along the line. By 7:30 p.m., the most intense part of the storm cell had moved toward Alexandria, according to Capital Weather.

Storm Damage and Restoration Efforts

The powerful storms caused significant damage across the region. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to numerous calls for downed trees and wires as a result of the storms, according to reporting on the incident. The damaging winds toppled trees and large branches, blocked roadways, and triggered widespread power outages across multiple jurisdictions.

Dominion Energy urged customers to report outages through its mobile app or website at dominionenergy.com/outage, or by calling 1-866-366-4357. The utility advised residents to stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines and to treat any fallen line as live. Restoration began Friday morning, with Alexandria’s outages falling below 2,000 by late Friday morning—under one-fifth of the overnight peak—as Dominion crews worked ahead of afternoon heat and additional storm threats.

The storms arrived on an oppressively hot day, with a Heat Advisory in effect through Friday evening and another scheduled for the following day, when highs near 95 and heat index values as high as 102 were forecast. Additional showers and storms, some potentially severe, were forecast for Friday afternoon and evening, compounding challenges for customers still waiting on power restoration.
