Super Micro lands gigawatt AI data center deal with SpaceX and xAI

Super Micro Computer has landed a gigawatt-scale AI data center deal with SpaceX and xAI, marking a major win for the server maker as demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure accelerates. CEO Charles Liang announced in June 2026 that he was “proud to co-build another new Gigawatt AI datacenter for @SpaceX and @XAI within a year,” signaling the company’s central role in powering one of the largest AI compute projects under development.

The deal underscores Super Micro’s position at the forefront of the AI infrastructure boom. The company disclosed in July 2026 that it had received over $60 billion in new orders in its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended June 30, with its backlog hitting record levels. Those orders are expected to be delivered over future quarters, according to the company’s preliminary business update.

The announcement also coincided with a significant margin improvement. Super Micro raised its gross margin forecast for the June quarter to between 15% and 17%, up from an earlier range of 8.2% to 8.4%, citing a favorable customer and product mix. The stock surged 15% after the disclosure on July 21, 2026, reflecting investor confidence in both the company’s profitability trajectory and its ability to secure marquee customers.

SpaceX and xAI, Elon Musk’s AI venture, merged in February 2026 to form SpaceXAI, a combined entity valued at $1.25 trillion. The company has been aggressively expanding its AI compute infrastructure, and the gigawatt-scale facility represents a critical piece of that strategy. A gigawatt of power represents one of the largest single data center deployments and sits at the far end of current AI data center sizes, according to recent analysis.

Super Micro’s Data Center Building Block Solutions (DCBBS) platform plays a central role in the company’s ability to execute such large-scale projects. The modular approach, which bundles servers, liquid cooling, power, networking, and management software into pre-integrated building blocks, allows customers to scale from small clusters to gigawatt-sized facilities. The platform is designed to shorten time-to-deployment and improve build quality—critical advantages in a market where every month of delay costs customers millions in lost AI compute capacity.

The company has demonstrated speed in similar projects. In 2025, Super Micro helped build xAI’s Colossus data center—a facility with 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs—in just 122 days, according to CEO Liang. That track record suggests the company has the operational capability to meet the aggressive timeline for the SpaceX and xAI gigawatt facility.

For Super Micro, the deal validates its strategy of positioning itself as a complete infrastructure provider rather than merely a server vendor. With AI data center deployments becoming the dominant driver of technology spending, securing long-term agreements with major cloud and AI players has become essential to growth. The company’s $60 billion order backlog and record margins suggest that Super Micro has successfully captured a disproportionate share of that spending.

The gigawatt data center for SpaceX and xAI is one of several major AI infrastructure projects announced or under way. Google, Anthropic, and other major AI labs are all pursuing similar scale-ups, creating sustained demand for the kind of integrated solutions Super Micro specializes in.
