Ukraine’s PM Svyrydenko resigns as Zelenskyy reshuffles government

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stepped down on July 12 as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a major government reshuffle and signaled a shift in the country’s political strategy. Svyrydenko, 39, served as prime minister for nearly one year after her appointment in July 2025, succeeding Denys Shmyhal.

Zelenskyy said in a post on social media that “Ukraine is changing its political strategy,” adding that each priority foreign policy direction would be overseen by an experienced official capable of delivering on agreements reached with international partners. “Personnel changes will begin in Ukraine to ensure the implementation of the updated political strategy,” he stated, according to Reuters.

The president thanked Svyrydenko for her willingness to lead “a new significant direction in relations with a key partner,” though he did not specify her new role. Several reports suggested she could take on a diplomatic position, possibly related to Ukraine’s relations with the United States.

Svyrydenko brought significant experience in U.S. relations to her role as prime minister. As first deputy prime minister and economy minister before her promotion, she had led Ukraine’s delegation to Washington and negotiated a critical minerals agreement with the Trump administration that helped strengthen ties between Kyiv and Washington, according to Al Jazeera.

Zelenskyy said the new political strategy would prioritize several foreign policy goals: manufacturing Patriot air defense systems under license, advancing Ukraine’s bid for European Union membership, and deepening ties with the Gulf region, which he called one of the world’s “most promising” areas for security and economic cooperation. The reshuffle also includes changes in the leadership of law enforcement agencies, though details remain limited.

In a statement, Svyrydenko wrote: “I am proud to have had the honour of leading the Government during one of the most difficult periods in Ukraine’s modern history. I thank every man and woman defending Ukrainian land. Our warriors are our strength and the foundation of our independence.”

The reshuffle marks the second major government reorganization in roughly one year. In July 2025, Zelenskyy had replaced Prime Minister Shmyhal with Svyrydenko as part of a broader cabinet restructuring. The New York Times reported that Zelenskyy’s latest reshuffle comes as the military situation has begun to shift in Ukraine’s favor, signaling a potential shift from wartime crisis management toward longer-term strategic planning.
