White House launches 25 Freedom Fuel gas stations in Philadelphia area at $3.47/gal

The White House announced the launch of 25 Freedom Fuel gas stations in the Philadelphia area on Tuesday, with fuel priced at $3.47 per gallon in honor of the 47th President. The stations began operations as part of what the administration called an effort to provide relief at the pump for drivers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The first Freedom Fuel station opened in Upper Dublin Township at a former Sunoco location. At $3.47 per gallon, the price undercuts nearby competitors—a Citgo station about five minutes away charges $3.79, while a Gulf station offers regular gas at $3.85, according to the Inquirer.

But analysts and critics have raised serious questions about how the stations are able to offer fuel so cheaply. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, examined the numbers and concluded the pricing is not sustainable. “Stations selling at this price, it’s not sustainable,” De Haan said. “Generally, when losses happen, somebody’s got to pay for it.”

De Haan estimated that the Freedom Fuel stations are losing between 20 and 50 cents per gallon at their advertised price. According to De Haan, “The stations lowering prices via the Freedom Fuel Network in PA, NJ, etc are simply being subsidized – the stations are losing money – which is being paid for by someone or some entity.”

The White House has maintained that Freedom Fuel is a private company initiative and that the administration has not provided direct funding. A White House spokesperson confirmed that the company is “not purchasing gasoline at a discount” and said the business was “simply making gas more affordable for drivers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.” However, the spokesperson declined to elaborate on how the stations achieve their pricing or identify the company behind the network.

De Haan also reported that the Freedom Fuel Network was registered on June 23, 2026, to Corporation Trust Company—a Delaware-based entity that Trump has used in previous business dealings. This detail fueled speculation about potential financial interests in the arrangement, though the White House has not addressed such claims.

Gas prices in the Philadelphia area have been volatile. The average cost of a gallon reached $3.95 on July 7, according to AAA, up nearly 20 percent from a year earlier when prices averaged $3.31. Prices spiked in May after the United States attacked Iran and the Strait of Hormuz was closed, but have since declined.
