Kosovo: Prishtina Airport refuses EBRD loan

Prishtinë, October 20, 2007 – Kosovar daily “Express” reports on Prishtina International Airport which refused a loan offered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). According to the daily’s source at the airport, the decision was made after the discussion about this loan had been ongoing for years.

The refusal was confirmed by Airport officials. “Having improved the financial situation in the last two years, the Airport management hopes that some infrastructural projects can in the future be financed from the income of the company,” stated Skender Bucolli, Airport Spokesperson.

Back in 2004 the EBRD expressed readiness to give loans to some Publicly Owned Enterprises (POEs) in Kosovo. The airport needed a loan for its projects, such is the refurbishment of the runway and other projects. Initially the EBRD said they will allocate a loan of some €40m, but later it was discussed and changed to €15. The negotiations took very long and made the airport find alternatives. First the airport received a loan of €12m from the Kosovo Budget and lately it got the approval for €13,5m loan from Raiffeisen Bank Kosovo.
