Lucky Supermarket’s Danville location will close July 17 due to underperformance, marking the second Lucky California store closure in the Tri-Valley region in less than three years.
The store at 660 San Ramon Valley Boulevard in Danville will shut its doors at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 17, according to Save Mart Companies, the parent company of Lucky Supermarkets. “We routinely assess the performance of all of our stores to ensure they meet business standards,” Save Mart spokesperson Phil Keene told Patch in an email. “Through the normal course of business, we sometimes have to make the tough decision to close an underperforming location. Based on economic factors, we will be closing our Lucky store #708 at 660 San Ramon Valley Blvd. in Danville, CA.”
The closure follows a pattern of Lucky consolidation in the region. A Lucky location in Dublin’s Fallon Gateway shopping center closed in November 2023, along with stores in Fremont and Millbrae the same day. According to KRON4, Lucky said those stores were closed due to “underperformance” at those specific locations.
Keene said Save Mart will work to transfer employees from the Danville location to nearby stores. Lucky California still maintains locations in San Ramon, Pleasanton, and Livermore, providing alternatives for customers in the broader area. Remaining supermarkets in Danville include Trader Joe’s, Smart & Final Extra, Lunardi’s Markets, and Safeway, as well as Whole Foods and Sprouts nearby in San Ramon.
The Danville closure reflects broader challenges in California’s grocery sector. Save Mart Companies, which operates more than 200 stores across California and Northern Nevada under the banners of Save Mart, Lucky, Lucky California, and FoodMaxx, has faced economic headwinds. In June 2024, the company was acquired by Canada’s Jim Pattison Group, marking the second ownership change in two years.
