Social Security transitions to electronic payments in 2026

Social Security is completing its transition to electronic payments in 2026, phasing out paper checks entirely as federal law and Executive Order 14247 require all federal benefits to be paid electronically as of September 30, 2025.

Quick Facts

  • Paper checks are 16 times more likely to be lost, stolen, altered, or returned undeliverable than electronic payments.
  • The average cost to print a check is $3.07, approximately 20 times more expensive than automated payments.
  • Beneficiaries can receive payments via direct deposit to a bank account or through the Direct Express prepaid debit card program.
  • Those unable to transition can request a waiver through the U.S. Treasury by calling 1-877-874-6347.

The Social Security Administration encourages beneficiaries still receiving paper checks to switch to electronic payments as soon as possible. Electronic payments deposit directly into a bank account or prepaid debit card, eliminating delays from mail delivery and reducing fraud risks.

Direct deposit can be set up through a personal mySocial Security account online, or beneficiaries can contact their financial institution to send direct deposit information to Social Security electronically. Those without a bank account can enroll in the Direct Express program by calling 1-800-333-1795 or visiting GoDirect.gov, or by calling 1-800-967-6857.

The transition saves the federal government millions annually while providing faster, more secure benefit delivery. Electronic funds transfers are processed faster than mail-based checks, ensuring beneficiaries receive their Social Security or Supplemental Security Income on time each month.

The Social Security Administration has recognized that some beneficiaries may face challenges making this transition due to mental health concerns, lack of access to financial institutions, or other circumstances. Those individuals can request an exception waiver through the U.S. Treasury.
