President Donald Trump arrived in Houston on August 27 for a Republican National Committee fundraiser aimed at boosting Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Senate campaign, before honoring the Artemis II astronauts at NASA’s Johnson Space Center on Friday.
The high-dollar event features ticket prices ranging from $10,000 for a reception to nearly $500,000 for a host committee package, according to leaked invitation details. A photo opportunity with Trump costs $88,600 per couple, while a roundtable seat runs $250,000.
Paxton’s Senate race against Democratic state Representative James Talarico has become one of the most competitive in the nation. The Trump-backed effort to raise funds for Republican candidates comes as recent polling shows Paxton and Talarico in a statistical dead heat, with the Cook Political Report recently rating the contest a “Toss Up” — the first time it has rated a Texas U.S. Senate race that way since 2018.
The Texas Senate race is projected to become the second-most expensive Senate race in history, with combined spending from campaigns and outside groups expected to reach approximately $440 million, according to analysis by political intelligence firm AdImpact. Since the primary ended, Democrat Talarico has spent more than $23 million on general election advertising, compared to roughly $200,000 by Paxton and pro-Paxton groups, though that dynamic is expected to shift dramatically after September 4 when federal rules lower advertising costs for campaigns within 60 days of the election.
Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews before departing that he and groups supporting him have already raised $850 million for the purpose of holding onto Republican control of Congress. The pro-Trump super PAC MAGA, Inc. raised more than $400 million as of the end of July, according to Federal Election Commission records.
Honoring Artemis II Astronauts
On Friday morning, Trump will travel to NASA’s Johnson Space Center to present the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the crew of the Artemis II lunar flyby mission. The ceremony, scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on August 28, will honor NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
The four astronauts completed a historic 10-day journey around the moon and back in April 2026, becoming the first humans to see the entire far side of the moon with their own eyes. The Congressional Space Medal of Honor is the highest honor bestowed upon space explorers by the United States.
This marks Trump’s second public recognition of the Artemis II crew; he hosted them at the White House in late April 2026, shortly after their return from the lunar mission.
