State Farm begins issuing $5 billion dividend to auto customers

State Farm has begun issuing a $5 billion dividend to auto insurance customers, marking the largest payout in the company’s 103-year history. The payments, which average about $100 per vehicle, are being distributed across more than 49 million State Farm Mutual auto policies.

The dividend stems from State Farm’s stronger-than-expected underwriting performance in 2025 combined with the company’s financial strength, according to the insurer’s announcement. Each customer’s payment is calculated as a percentage of their 2025 premiums, ranging from 4 percent to 10 percent depending on their state and policy details.

State Farm began distributing the payments in late July 2026 and will continue issuing them in waves through late summer. Qualifying customers—those who held active personal auto policies during 2025—are being notified of their pending payments. The company also reduced rates in 40 states during 2025, which totaled $4.6 billion in lower premiums for customers even before this dividend announcement.

The $5 billion payout represents a significant recovery for the insurer. The previous record dividend from State Farm was $1.9 billion, issued in 2020 during the pandemic. This marks the first auto insurance dividend for State Farm customers since 2021, after the company experienced underwriting losses in 2021 and 2022 following rate reductions made in 2020.

State Farm emphasized that the dividend will not affect future auto insurance rates, which are set based on projected future costs rather than past performance. The company operates as a mutual insurance organization, meaning it is owned by policyholders rather than shareholders, allowing it to return surplus earnings directly to customers. Large mutual insurance companies have a history of returning capital during strong financial years; Northwestern Mutual announced a record $9.2 billion dividend payout for 2026, demonstrating that significant policyholder returns have become more common across the industry.
