United Airlines launches 14 new routes from Chicago O’Hare in 2026

United Airlines announced plans to launch 14 new nonstop routes from Chicago O’Hare International Airport in 2026, though FAA flight restrictions have complicated the carrier’s expansion timeline at the nation’s busiest hub.

In January 2026, Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, confirmed the carrier would begin service on 14 new routes comprising five year-round and nine seasonal services. The routes span destinations across the United States and Canada, reflecting United’s commitment to strengthen Chicago as its hometown hub.

The expansion faced significant headwinds when the Federal Aviation Administration imposed a daily flight cap of 2,708 operations at O’Hare beginning May 17, 2026. The FAA implemented the restriction to address congestion caused by constrained gate capacity and ongoing taxiway construction closures. The agency later extended the cap through October 2027, forcing United to delay 10 of its planned new routes, including service to cities like Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, Erie, Kalamazoo, La Crosse, and Lansing.

Despite the FAA restrictions, United successfully launched 12 new domestic routes from O’Hare during 2026. According to aviation analytics data, the routes that did launch included service to Santa Barbara, Eugene, Oregon; Paducah, Kentucky; Lynchburg, Virginia; Monterey, California; St. George, Utah; Idaho Falls; Cody, Wyoming; Key West, Florida; Harrison County, West Virginia; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Kearney, Nebraska.

The Chicago-Cody route proved particularly notable as one of the few new O’Hare connections to a small regional airport. Cody serves as the closest airport to Yellowstone National Park, making it a gateway for travelers heading to the popular national destination. The route operates on a seasonal basis using regional aircraft.

United’s O’Hare expansion reflects broader competitive dynamics at the airport. American Airlines launched six new nonstop transatlantic routes for 2026, while Frontier Airlines announced four new nonstop routes launching late 2026. The carrier also added international service, including expanded capacity at O’Hare through a concourse modernization project.

United emphasized that the 10 delayed routes remain part of its long-term strategy for O’Hare. In a statement, the airline said it was “working with impacted customers to find alternative travel options or provide refunds” and remained “committed to providing important connectivity to these cities” once the FAA order expires.

The FAA’s flight restrictions stemmed from operational constraints that emerged after airlines, particularly United and American, significantly expanded their combined schedules at O’Hare. The cap represents approximately 370 fewer daily flights than the 3,080 operations airlines had collectively planned for summer 2026.
