Mamdani’s NYC approval hits 69% in latest poll, up 11 points since June

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s approval rating hit 69% among NYC voters in a Siena College poll conducted August 3–6, representing an 11-point jump from his 58% favorability in June, according to USA Today and reporting from the poll released August 12.

The latest survey, which polled 811 likely New York voters, found that 24% view Mamdani unfavorably, while approximately 8% remain undecided. His approval stands markedly higher within the city than statewide, where he registers 47% favorable and 44% unfavorable—a 22-point gap that underscores his stronger grip on urban voters.

Mamdani took office on January 1, 2026, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor, first South Asian mayor, and its youngest mayor in over a century. His rise from state assemblyman to the city’s top job marked a significant political shift in New York’s leadership, and his early approval trajectory has been steeper than his immediate predecessor’s.

When Eric Adams completed his first 100 days in March 2022, he held a 61% approval rating among city residents. Mamdani, by contrast, stood at 55% favorable after 100 days in April 2026—lower than Adams’ early standing but still solidly positive. Since then, Mamdani’s numbers have climbed steadily, surpassing Adams’ early-term peak.

A Siena poll also found that within New York City, the DSA itself holds a 49–32% favorability rating, though statewide the organization is viewed unfavorably at 30–47%.

Observers have noted that Mamdani’s honeymoon period may be cooling following his administration’s rollout of a pied-à-terre tax on second-home owners, which drew criticism over implementation and public messaging. The Washington Post reported in mid-August that the botched rollout was “widely seen as bringing an end to his honeymoon period” after eight months in office. Despite that controversy, his latest approval numbers remain among the highest for any sitting NYC mayor in recent years.
