ProPublica reported that Umar Kremlev helped pay hundreds of thousands of dollars toward Donald Trump Jr.’s private Bahamas wedding, funding a rented private island, fireworks and large event expenses.
According to records and interviews reviewed by ProPublica, payments for the celebration came from an IBA-affiliated entity in Dubai and covered the rental of a second private island used for a reception and sleeping villas, plus a fireworks display.
ProPublica said Kremlev attended parts of the three-day event alongside a group of Russian guests and that Trump Jr.’s spokesman called Kremlev a “personal friend of Don.” National security advisers quoted by ProPublica warned that accepting such largesse from a Putin-linked oligarch raised questions about influence.
The report notes Kremlev is president of the International Boxing Association (IBA) and that the IBA’s move of operations to Dubai included a new Dubai entity, IB Challenger, which ProPublica says paid the wedding expenses; ProPublica reviewed records and interviewed people familiar with the event.
The wedding guest list numbered about 50 and included members of the Trump family and several Russians who, ProPublica writes, sometimes stood apart and spoke Russian. The ProPublica account says Kremlev’s team helped plan the event and that the company that ran the fireworks charges about $70,000 for similar shows. The outlet also reports that some payments traced to entities linked to the IBA rather than to Kremlev personally.
Trump Jr.’s spokesman, quoted by ProPublica, did not dispute that Kremlev covered expenses and described him as a personal friend; Kremlev’s press office told ProPublica the two were friendly and that Kremlev has never discussed politics with his American acquaintances.
Analysts quoted in the article warned of the appearance of potential influence when a foreign-aligned billionaire finances large personal events; retired counterintelligence officials told ProPublica that such payments raise “what you owe me” concerns and access risks.
