American Airlines Vice Chair and Chief Strategy Officer Steve Johnson will retire at year-end 2026, the carrier announced in June after Johnson informed the airline of his plans on June 14. Johnson, who has spent more than 30 years in the airline industry, will step down after a career spanning multiple carriers and leadership roles at the Fort Worth-based airline.
Johnson joined America West Airlines in 1995, beginning his aviation career at a regional carrier that would eventually become part of the larger US Airways and then American Airlines through mergers and consolidation. He held various executive positions across those organizations before his appointment as Chief Strategy Officer in May 2023, a role that expanded to include Vice Chair responsibilities.

Most recently, Johnson stepped in to lead American’s Commercial organization from May 2024 to November 2025—an 18-month period during which he helped stabilize and reinvigorate the airline’s commercial operations during what company leadership described as a critical period. This assignment came after former Chief Commercial Officer Vasu Raja left the carrier in June 2024, and Johnson’s stabilization efforts were credited with helping the airline navigate operational challenges.
Before his appointment as Chief Strategy Officer, Johnson served as Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs from 2009 to 2022, where he oversaw corporate governance and legal affairs. His long tenure at American and its predecessors made him one of the airline’s most experienced executives, with deep institutional knowledge spanning decades of industry consolidation and transformation.

Johnson’s retirement comes as American Airlines navigates significant competitive and operational pressures. In July 2026, CEO Robert Isom outlined an ambitious strategy to close what he described as a more than $3 billion profitability gap with rivals United and Delta, focusing on improving reliability, customer experience, and pricing power. The airline has also faced internal challenges, including a no-confidence vote from flight attendants in February 2026 directed at CEO Isom over operational failures.
The airline has not yet announced who will assume Johnson’s responsibilities or whether the Vice Chair and Chief Strategy Officer roles will be restructured following his departure at year-end.
