Insurance verification startup Axle raised $17.5 million in Series A funding led by Base10 Partners, the company announced August 11, marking a significant expansion of the AI-native clearinghouse that automates manual insurance workflows across the economy.
The round, which also included continued backing from Y Combinator and Gradient Ventures alongside new investors Stage2 Capital and industry angels, represents roughly four times Axle’s total prior funding to date, according to Tech Funding News. Earlier this year, the insurance industry saw InsurTech funding surge to $2.44 billion in Q2 2026, a four-year high, signaling robust appetite for companies automating insurance operations.
Axle now clears more than $100 billion in insurance coverage annually across more than 4,000 customers, including Fortune 500 companies like Rocket Mortgage, Avis, Experian, and Sonic Automotive, according to the company’s announcement. Over the past six months, Axle has tripled the number of workflows it automates and accelerated those workflows by a factor of 20, the company stated.
The core problem Axle solves is structural: insurance carriers run fragmented systems, and businesses that depend on insurance still verify policies through faxes and phone calls. A single mortgage lender may contact an insurance carrier more than 10 times during the life of one loan just to confirm coverage remains active. Axle’s infrastructure routes requests to the correct carrier system and normalizes unstructured data into a single API that software and AI agents can query to instantly verify whether a customer has insurance and whether it meets specific requirements.
Jordan Bannantine, head of risk management at SIXT, a rental company using Axle, said in the company’s announcement: “Before Axle, verifying a renter’s insurance meant either absorbing the risk or slowing the customer down at the counter. Axle gives us an instant, accurate answer at the moment it matters, and it has helped us recover millions in losses we used to write off each year.”
Axle’s positioning as a clearinghouse—connective infrastructure that works across carriers and insurance categories—contrasts with other well-funded insurtech startups. Corgi, which operates its own full-stack insurance carrier, raised $378 million total and was valued at $2.6 billion. FurtherAI raised $25 million in Series A to automate document workflows for carriers and brokers. Axle instead sits a layer further down, offering the plumbing that other products and AI agents can build on top of, a vision that depends on the company becoming the default rail carriers route through.
Adeyemi Ajao, co-founder and managing partner at Base10 Partners, said: “In 2026, no one should be faxing PDFs or sitting on hold to confirm a policy. Few real economy industries are more foundational or more manual than insurance. The Axle team built the rails that make insurance programmable, and we believe a generation of products will be built on top of them.”
Axle will use the funding to expand its engineering and go-to-market teams and extend the clearinghouse to more than 50 insurance segments spanning home, auto, renters, commercial, and specialty coverage. The company, founded in 2022 by Cameron Duncan, Armaan Sikand, and Nihar Parikh—three Emory University graduates who previously worked together at Deloitte Digital and Cox Automotive—operates from bases in Atlanta and New York with a team of around 20 people, according to Y Combinator.
